NY nanny who murdered two children sentenced to life

"My family and I, we create and built".

Yoselyn Ortega, 55, was convicted of first-degree murder April 18 after a two-month trial in Manhattan Supreme Court. "The defendant set out to destroy what [husband] Kevin and I had created and built - an inspired, happy, thriving family".

Ortega had been working for the Krim family for about two years when she took the children to a bathroom of their apartment and killed them in 2012. "I was hoping it was a nightmare, and it wasn't", said Mr Krim. "What is wrong with them?"

Marina and Kevin Krim both gave emotional and angry comments during their victim impact statements on Monday. Each time she makes a wish, it's always for Leo and Lulu to come back to be with us. "Nessie knows that wish will never come true", the mom said.

Their family grew by two after the murders when they welcomed sons Felix and Linus and they launched a foundation in honor of Lulu and Leo.

The mom almost couldn't finish her statement.

The damn bodies of Lucia "Lulu" Krim, 6, along with her brother Leo, 2, have been seen with their own mommy in a tub in the Manhattan apartment on 25 October 2012.

The eruption, which has already destroyed dozens of homes, has caused 19 new fissures so far, all spewing noxious gases and lava. Almost 20 volcanic fissures have opened and are spewing lava and poisonous gas across the big island Tuesday morning.

The children's mother had been out with a third child and returned home to find them dead. Because I want to talk about all our kids.

"We were madly in love" with Leo, too, the dad added.

She called out the "evil defendant" and her "entire family of bad, unethical people".

"This defendant has to this day shown no remorse".

Kevin said the only way he and his wife survived their nightmare was through the love of others.

Her husband Kevin thanked the jurors, court officials and New York Police Department and said the family would mourn Lulu and Leo "for the rest of our lives". "It was real", Krim told jurors. "Why hasn't she shed a tear now?"

Ahead of hearing her fate, a tearful Ortega, 55, apologized in court to Lucia and Leo's family.

Trump's spokeswoman had said the first lady was likely to remain hospitalized for "the duration of the week". First Lady Melania Trump had surgery on Monday morning for what aides called a "benign" kidney condition.

Kevin also testified in heartbreaking detail about learning that two of his children were dead and seeing their bodies at the hospital.

Ortega's lawyers presented evidence at her trial that she did not know what she was doing because she was mentally ill, but it was not enough to sway the jury, which rejected this argument in convicting her.

Prosecutors said Ortega knew what she understood "every stab, every slash" as she committed the crime.

She was putting her affairs in order.

At her trial, jurors had listened for weeks to grim testimony about the violent killings of the children.

Ortega stabbed Leo five times and Lucia 30 times, according to testimony from an assistant medical examiner.

He slammed Ortega for not pleading responsible and forcing the case right into a courtroom, including that she by no means ought to have put the household or the jurors by it. She had been working for the Krim family for almost two years when she took the children to the back bathroom of their apartment and killed them. She has never shed a tear for these children.
