It is a time where Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset, and in the United States that is approximately 16 hours of no food and water every day for a month.

Muslims are not only required to fast during daylight hours, but must also abstain from sexual intercourse between spouses, smoking, swearing, arguments or gossip. Observers are allowed to eat a pre-dawn meal, including power foods like dates, yogurt and fava beans, to get them through the day, according to USA Today.

Google has also announced the roll out of their interactive calligraphy application called Qalam to help create 3D Ramadan messages and an augmented reality tool, the Qibla Finder, which helps Muslims locate where Mecca is before prayer.

In honor of the holiday, which sees Muslims fast from sunset to sunrise with no food, water, sex or impure thoughts, we have compiled six images.

At the end of the 29 or 30 days of fasting, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr which literally means "festival of breaking the fast" in Arabic.

There are some exemptions from fasting: you can eat and drink if you are suffering from an illness, travelling, are elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, chronically ill or menstruating. Taraweeh is the special prayer held post Isha'a namaz on every night of Ramadan, when the entire Quran is narrated in divided portions over the next 27 days.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five obligatory pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayer, annual charity - known as "zakat" - and performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah.
