Britain's Simon Yates claimed his second stage win at the Giro d'Italia to extend his overall race lead in Osimo.

"I'm getting there, day by day", he explained.

What was expected to be a quiet transition stage - over the longest distance of the entire Giro at 244km - turned into a frantic day of racing after Chaves was dropped on the category two climb which opened the day's racing. He (Dumoulin) was chasing me all the way in the final there, it was an extremely hard final. But with two sprint stages ahead before a mammoth stage 14 on Saturday night, a solid grip on sixth place is an extremely advantageous spot to be in as the race starts to get serious.

"We just let it happen and if it came back then I would obviously go for it".

"He is flying and I'm genuinely happy for him".

The Team Sky rider dropped off the pace during the final ascent to finish 40 seconds behind Yates.

That leaves the four-time Tour de France victor 23rd overall and a massive three minutes and 20 seconds off the overall lead.
