As criticism for Israel mounts, Guatemala opens its embassy in Jerusalem

Israel has said it carried out airstrikes on what it described as militant sites in Gaza in response to machine gun fire that hit a building in the Israeli city of Sderot.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel did everything it could to prevent civilian casualties but that Gaza's Hamas rulers were to blame for using them as human shields.

The worldwide community does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the entire city and says its final status should be set in peace negotiations.

A senior member of Gaza's Hamas rulers has said that all but a dozen of the 62 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire during Gaza border protests this week were members of the Islamist group.

The fresh violence in Gaza on Monday, when Israel's army killed 60 Palestinians during protests, came as the United States formally moved its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

The bloodshed continued to draw world attention as violence abated late Wednesday, on the eve of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Since protests began on March 30, more than 90 Palestinian demonstrators have been killed by Israeli live ammunition, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Pushing back against foreign censure of its army's actions, Israel has - with Washington's backing - accused Hamas of using civilians as cover for attacks across the frontier fence and to distract from Gaza's internal problems.

The comments were welcomed by Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, who said Bardawil had "set the record straight".

The global denunciations cast a shadow over what Israel had hoped would be another showcase moment this week: Guatemala's president cutting the ribbon on its new embassy in Jerusalem in a tidy office park on the other side of the city from the newly minted US Embassy. Israel disputes this and says some of those killed were firing at its troops.

Omar Shakir, the local director for Human Rights Watch, said that if they were unarmed, the identity of the slain protesters and their affiliation to a militant group has little to do with Israel's right under global law to use lethal force at a demonstration. Paraguay is slated to do the same next week.

Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital.

Regarding the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem, Hang said the consistent stance of Vietnam is to support the fight for justice of Palestinian people.
