Alberto is 2018's first named tropical system

It has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center says a disturbance moving toward the Gulf of Mexico is now Subtropical Storm Alberto.

Flooding also damaged several houses on Florida's Gulf Coast. Often, these storms have a radius of maximum winds which is farther out than what is observed for purely "tropical" systems.

Subtropical Storm Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season - was continued roiling toward parts of coastal Mexico and Cuba with rip currents and unsafe surf on Saturday.

Flood watches already have been issued from Alabama to Georgia.

The slow-moving storm will also dump heavy rain across much of the southeastern United States through Memorial Day weekend. This means tropical storm force winds of 39 mph or greater are possible within 48 hours. "We're not necessarily anxious about severe weather per say, but there may be some bands that come out this way". Rainfall could reach up to 6 inches in parts of Florida up to the Carolinas, Weather.com reported. If Alberto jogs west of the forecast track, the area could see the chance of flooding rains increase.

By Saturday afternoon and evening rain will become more widespread and heavier as Alberto drifts northeast closer to Southwest Florida.

The U.S. was expected to start feeling Alberto's effects Saturday.

However, once Alberto gets into the Gulf, computer models suggest it strengthening into a stronger storm as it enters a more favorable environment.

Highest winds remained at 40 miles per hour.

As you may have guessed, beach and boating weather will be far from ideal and even risky over the holiday weekend.

The weather service says showers and storms look to continue Sunday night into Monday, and it will remain plenty humid.

There are now no severe weather alerts for Northeast Florida, but rip current warnings were issued Friday along Florida's Gulf Coast area expected to be extended to the East Coast over the weekend.
