India Nipah virus outbreak death toll touches 17

The name of the village was Kampung Sungai Nipah, hence the name Nipah virus, informed Dr. Jay Deshmukh in an event organised by IMA.

Kozhikode: As the Nipah virus scare mounts tension in Kerala, the state government has chose to delay the re-opening of schools and colleges in Kozhikode till June 12, which has deferred the examinations barring the Union Publis Service Commission (UPSC).

Despite reports of drastic drops in passenger flow from and to Kerala, airline authorities from Air India have denied the rumours. This comes in the wake of the district being on high alert owing to a possible second wave of Nipah Virus infection.

Dr Jayasree, Kozhikode District Medical Officer said, "As of May 31, the total number of confirmed cases stands at 18, out of this 16 have died".

The government has not issued a travel advisory but asked people to avoid unnecessary travel to the virus-infected areas of Kerala for time being. Out of the 17 people, three died in last two days and are suspected to have been contracted when they came in touch with another infected person.

The antibodies to fight the Nipah Virus have also arrived in Kozhikode. The advisory issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday said that no incidence of the virus has been reported from the Capital.
