Mitch McConnell Cancels Senate's August Recess

Corker won't say how many people officially back his plan, but many Republicans say they are anxious about the tariffs Trump announced.

"Doing anything around here is like pushing a major boulder up hill", Corker said. It's not just Trump, the senators say, but past administrations that have leaned too heavily into the national security provision they now want to subject to congressional oversight.

Joining Corker in introducing the plan was Democratic Sen.

Corker, who plans to retire at the end of this year, joined with Pennsylvania Republican Pat Toomey to draft legislation that would allow Congress to review and approve tariffs that are based on national security concerns.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has a long list of things to do this summer, hoping to net a string of smaller but solid victories for Republicans - including members of his conference up for re-election - as well as the President.

"Whatever rule you came up with, that's not the rule of this house", DeFrancisco said, pounding his fist on his desk. But the Senate version carries a warning to Trump, with a trade provision to block any White House plan to lift penalties on the China-based telecommunications company ZTE, which faces trade law violations over selling sensitive technologies to United States adversaries. "And I don't think he's OK with anything that I've seen coming our way", McConnell added.

"It's a difference of opinion", Corker told The Post.

The legislation that Corker intends to file would require the president to submit to Congress any tariffs put in place under a process that invokes national security.

McConnell cites a "judicial crisis" of empty seats that still need to be filled - ignoring the fact that the reason so many seats remain open is because the Senate GOP refused to confirm President Barack Obama's nominations. The majority of Republican senators and representatives have confirmed Trump's nominees, agreed to blow up the USA deficit, and generally declined to comment on unsavory details about his personal life.

The idea being pursued by Corker, Sen. Democrats have far more incumbents seeking re-election this year, and keeping them off the trail could be to the GOP's advantage. "The House is not", he said, noting that this is why it's so important for Republicans to retain their majority in the Senate following the 2018 midterm elections.

Congress rarely finishes work by September 30, the end of the fiscal year, on the one-dozen individual appropriations bills to keep the federal government fully operating.

The second-ranking Democrat in the Senate said August will bring high premiums, and they want to help correct that for the American people. "We have the worst trade deals ever made and we're going to have now fair trade deals", he said at the Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters.

Asked if the move was a shot across the bow aimed at his political opponents, McConnell responded, "If you look at the amount of work that we have to do, it's conceiveable to me that we can't use these weeks, even with cooperation, we've got a lot of approproiation bills to pass".
