The Liberals, who have been in government for the past 15 years, could drop to single-digit seats in the legislature, losing official party status.

Premier Kathleen Wynne stepped down as party leader after the Progressive Conservatives won a majority.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath was also pressed on the issue, and would only say that the decision was Ford's to make.

A final Ipsos opinion poll released on Wednesday had the PC party with 39 per cent of the vote, the NDP with 36 per cent and the Liberals with 19 per cent, with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

Ford is a newcomer to provincial politics, having only captured the party leadership three months ago.

The election campaign was supposed to be a contest that pitted fresh-faced PC leader Patrick Brown against two female leaders in do-or-die campaigns.

"People are really getting the hang of this vote-by-mail system", said Sacramento County's Interim Registrar of Voters Alice Jarboe. "We united our party and united our province and this is your victory".

Ivey, who stepped into the governor post after the resignation of Robert Bentley past year , will seek a full term in November. Menendez's opponent in November will be Republican businessman Bob Hugin, who won 75 percent in his primary.

The province of Ontario is now a Ford nation.

As well, Ford's own history and penchant for controversy could bite his federal Conservative cousins, which may explain why Scheer has kept a bit of distance thus far. The Greens took one seat in the race.

Doug Ford was elected premier of Canada's most populated province earlier today.

Elections Ontario says there are 10.2-million eligible voters this election. Wynne, 65, stepped down as party leader.

Ford, who has positioned himself as a champion of "the little guy" and has been compared to U.S. President Donald Trump, is wealthy businessman.

But any election has more losers than winners, and last night was no exception.

He has always been a controversial figure in Canada; during his one term as a Toronto city councillor he refused to attend the city's Pride parade - describing it as "middle-aged men, with pot bellies, running down the street buck naked" - and lashed out at a home for developmentally disabled youth, labelling it a "nightmare" that had "ruined the community".

Charles McVety, an anti-gay preacher who runs an organization that promotes homophobic conspiracy theories, told his Facebook followers that the election results show God "heard our prayers and delivered victory for the sake of our children". People waved party signs and embraced while they waited for Ford to arrive.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Ford to congratulate him and said he looks forward to working with him.

"That's what the people have decided, is the Liberals have seven seats, and it will be up to Mr. Ford if he wants to change that", Horwath said. Meanwhile, Liberals from the party's more pro-business wing - like Steven Del Duca - were defeated last night.

Indigenous representation is also generally very poor among candidates running for seats in Ottawa or at Queen's Park.

What's next for the Liberal Party after its historic Ontario election defeat? However, she added, "It's hard for the federal government to impose something against concerted opposition from the provinces".

The Liberals came to power in 2003 under Dalton McGuinty, and when he stepped down in 2013, Wynne took the reins.

However, Horwath had her own challenges when it was revealed that her election platform was improperly costed, several of her candidates had an online history of freakish and offensive rants and some of her proposals like a Sanctuary Province would cause administrative and financing headaches.
