Rob Whittaker's UFC middleweight title fight abandoned over 90 grams

Rob Whittaker's UFC middleweight title fight abandoned over 90 grams

It's a rematch of a contest from last July in which Whittaker (20-4) battled through a knee injury to eke out a unanimous 48-47 decision. "It was absolutely brutal".

According to MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz, Romero's second and final weight-in attempt clocked in at 185.2 pounds after he initially weighed in at 186 pounds earlier Friday morning. Even though Whittaker's belt won't be on the line, the fight still carries plenty of importance to the 185-pound division.

Whittaker, of Australia, survived the third, despite an onslaught of offense from Romero.

The local branch of the Islamic State, which is not included in the cease-fire announcement, claimed responsibility for that attack.

Romero, 41, did his best to do just that. Clearly taking a different strategy in this frame, it was a more aggressive Romero in the opening minutes, though Whittaker adjusted well and started launching big right hands that found their mark.

"It could have gone either way". I thought I controlled three of the five rounds, but he did drop me.

Romero, a former Olympic silver medalist in wrestling for Cuba, did not make a huge fuss over the score, but did admit he felt he won.

"I needed two hours, and the commission would only give me one", Romero said in response to the criticism, per MMA Junkie's Steven Marrocco. "Making weight sucks. But you can't miss weight twice on two title fights and still think you're running the show".

According to Okamoto, the UFC is now working with Romero and Whittaker's camps to try to keep the main event together. Whittaker has now won nine bouts in a row.
