The Pistons have hired former Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey.

But the franchise had its eyes on an National Basketball Association finals appearance this year after winning a franchise-record 59 games in the regular season, the second best record in the league behind only Houston.

Dwane Casey coaches the Toronto Raptors against the Washington Wizards during the first round of the playoffs on April 17, 2018.

Casey's new job comes after seven years with the Raptors, with whom he won four Atlantic Division championships and reached one conference finals.

The Pistons parted ways with Stan Van Gundy last month after a four year run with the team as President of Basketball Operations and head coach. "He embodies our culture and will be a great representative for our franchise".

Other candidates for the Pistons position included Michigan's John Beilein, TNT analyst Kenny Smith and Spurs assistant Ime Udoka. The 61-year-old finished his tenure as the team's winningest coach but could never get it over the hump in the playoffs. Casey also coached the Timberwolves from 2005-07, where he amassed a 53-69 record.
