But even before they met, Trump announced plans to leave early, raising questions about whether his aspirations for an ambitious outcome had been scaled back.

About 5,000 journalists are in Singapore for the occasion, but only a handful of American and North Korean reporters and photographers will be permitted at the venue when the two leaders greet each other.

He was received by Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

The White House announced Monday that Trump would leave Singapore Tuesday night after meeting with Kim, adding that talks between USA and North Korean officials "are ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected".

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday.

Trump and Kim will start their historic summit with a one-on-one session with translators.

Rodman has faced ridicule and criticism for his trips to North Korea, which some US politicians and activists view as serving only as fodder for North Korean propaganda.

Whatever the results, it will be one of the more unusual summits in recent history as a flamboyant, often erratic U.S. president gets a close-up look at a hereditary socialist despot who sits on a nuclear weapons programme. But it will only be the beginning of a longer process.

"Thanks PM Lee for spending $20 million of taxpayers money, which can. help a lot of needy families in Singapore to survive", posted one Facebook user.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Sunday called on European nations to stick together following Trump's announcement. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not show a clear stance on the issue, the official said.

Part of the interest in Tuesday's summit is simply because Kim has had limited appearances on the world stage. Rodman appeared in Trump's Celebrity Apprentice reality TV show, only to be booted off because he misspelled Melania Trump's name. Pyongyang has advocated for decades for a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War, rather than the armistice that has been in place for more than 60 years. Her earlier trip to South Korea in January triggered a media frenzy. And he made clear that, whatever the role of diplomats and aides in setting up the meeting, it would be the personal exchange between him and Kim that would be decisive.

He said about half of the cost is for security. Pyongyang's weapons program benefits from forced labor.

The meeting would have been unthinkable past year when tensions spiraled in the region over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs as it raced toward the goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States. Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders.

He explained that he gave the North Korean official Trump's book, "Art of the Deal", while he was in North Korea.

DPRK stands for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The North Korean leader has also said he now wants to focus on building the country's economy - and wants sanctions relief and worldwide investment.
