Spain's Rafael Nadal celebrates with the trophy after winning the final against Austria's Dominic Thiem on June 10, 2018.

Nadal has not lost at Roland Garros when taking the first set and that record did not look like coming under threat as he continually rebuffed Thiem's attempts to make inroads into his serve, taking the second courtesy of an early break.

The 21-year-old Nadal became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win three successive titles at Roland Garros.

"I never have been insane about all this kind of stuff", he told reporters, and not for the first time when asked about matching the 36-year-old.

The number of Grand Slam singles titles now held by Nadal, who is second on the all-time list among men in the Open Era, behind Federer (20), and ahead of Pete Sampras (14), Djokovic and Roy Emerson (12 each).

"Of course I think you have more chances in such a match than playing against him in the Wimbledon semi-final".

United States offers 'unique' guarantees to North Korea on eve of summit
Kim stood silently alongside, but the North Korean leader had earlier described their meeting as a "a good prelude to peace". The former National Basketball Association player visited Pyongyang five times since the North Korean leader took charge.

Nadal's 17th major title inevitably brought questions about his ultimate career goals.

While boosting his Wimbledon hopes, Roger Federer's decision to skip the French Open has dented the Parisian Grand Slam event and hurt the very sport that made him a global superstar, Mats Wilander told Reuters.

Thiem stayed with Nadal in the early going on a steamy afternoon.

"Sometimes, I see many, many players - even good players, top players - they go on the court against Rafa on clay, or Roger on hard court or any other surface, and you can nearly see that they don't really believe 100 percent that they can win", said Robin Soderling, who pulled off French Open upsets of Nadal in 2009, and Federer in 2010.

When Thiem sent a return long on a fifth match point, Nadal raised his arms in celebration.

In his 24th grand slam final, Nadal immediately looked comfortable in familiar surroundings and broke at the first time of asking as Thiem sent a backhand long and then dumped a forehand into the net.

Thiem for a change? Or same old Nadal script?
Yet Thiem's recovery was exceptional, moving out of sight with a ruthless second break and a confident hold to wrap up the opener. Earlier, Thiem needed to survive a nasty bout of the jitters to see off Marco Cecchinato and reach his first Grand Slam final.

"It's really incredible. I played a great match against a great player", said Nadal.

"I am sure you will win here in the next couple of years", Nadal told Thiem afterward.

From 4-all, 15-all in the opening set, Thiem faltered. Nadal held for 5-4, and Thiem basically handed over the next game - and the set - with four mistakes.

The Austrian speared a 222 kilometers per hour ace just for good measure in the fourth game to save a break point. After serving a fault, Nadal took the unusual step of heading to the sideline in the middle of a game.

"Last year I felt that I had a good opportunity to go far in the tournament (Wimbledon)".

"It's not even a dream to win here 11 times, because its impossible to think of something like this".

Trump breaks with G7 joint statement
Trump tried to lighten the mood friday with the summit host. "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't", he wrote. But the lead ministers from both countries talked trade on the sidelines of the G7 leaders' meeting on Friday.

Their career earnings are just as lopsided as their Grand Slam appearances: Thiem has earned $11.1 million in prize money over his career, while Nadal, the world's No. 1 player, has earned $98.0 million.
