United States offers 'unique' guarantees to North Korea on eve of summit

Following initial comments to reporters, Trump and Kim went into a private meeting accompanied exclusively by their translators, then a larger meeting with aides to both men, and finally a working lunch.

Even before the two leaders had left their separate city centre hotels and driven the 13 minutes through blocked-off police-lined roads to the island summit venue, the USA president used Twitter to claim victory and hit back at his critics. Their meeting, approximately 50 minutes long, resulted in the two men signing what Mr. Trump called a "pretty comprehensive" joint document. "We've had a past that stopped us from advancing, and wrong behaviors and practices sometimes closed our eyes and ears, but we've overcome those to come to this point".

Trump planned to speak to reporters after concluding the summit, the White House said.

Kim stood silently alongside, but the North Korean leader had earlier described their meeting as a "a good prelude to peace".

The summit capped a dizzying few days of foreign policy activity for Trump, who shocked USA allies over the weekend by using a meeting in Canada of the Group of Seven industrialized economies to alienate America's closest friends in the West. Lashing out over trade practices, Trump lobbed insults at his G-7 host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Pompeo laid out some of the USA cards on Monday, saying the administration was sticking to its demand for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the North. "If Trump goes there with his great heart, with his heart on the table, if he can let Kim see him really emotional, it will show that he's trustworthy as well", Rodman said, "It doesn't have to be about war, what happened in the past, about hatred, or how the future will be". Kim is seeking a security guarantee - possibly including a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War - and the removal of the U.S.'s nuclear umbrella protecting allies South Korea and Japan.

As the cameras captured the moment, Trump quipped: "Very nice". And today is a great day for everybody.

Tuesday's summit, which began about 9:00am local time (01:00 GMT) and ended with the signing shortly before 2:00pm (06:00 GMT), was punctuated by handshakes, smiles and upbeat comments from both Trump and Kim.
