Edmonton likely to host matches, as North America wins bid

The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada after FIFA's Congress voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to support the joint bid over Morocco, despite reluctance in some countries to choose North America while President Donald Trump was in office and souring US relations with its neighbors.

"Football today is the only victor".

The US hosted the World Cup in 1994, while the tournament was held twice in Mexico (1970 and 1986).

The U.S. has submitted 17 cities to host matches, but that list will be narrowed down to 10 by 2021.

The United Bid was endorsed by David Beckham and there will be 16 host cities across North America with the U.S. holding ten of the 16, while Mexico and Canada will have three each.

The U.S. proposed staging 60 out of the 80 games in 2026, when 16 teams will be added to the finals, leaving Canada and Mexico with ten fixtures each. But that is not carved in stone.

It will be the first ever World Cup that will bring together 48 teams hence the need for more facilities and proper management. The 207 members of Federation Internationale de Football Association not involved in the bids will vote Wednesday in Moscow .

Two notable absences, Chicago and Vancouver, did not agree to FIFA's requirements for hosting games and withdrew from consideration.

Infantino, the former secretary general of football's European governing body UEFA, was little known before he took over sport's richest governing body.

All of FIFA's 211 member associations - save the bidding countries - were eligible to take part in the electronic vote.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026. Having the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada will transform the way that Canadians perceive the global game and change the way the world sees Canada", CPL commissioner David Clanachan said in a statement.

Starting in 2026, there will be 16 groups of three teams, with the top two teams in the group advancing into the expanded round-of-32 knockout stages.
