Kyrie Irving says signing extension with Celtics "doesn't make any sense"

This is something that Irving expressed concerning his team stating that the Celtics have the "championship pedigree" with the group of players that they have assembled, according to Jay King of The Athletic.

"Contractually, financially, it just doesn't make any sense", Irving said about an extension, adding that the conversation will happen eventually, just not right now.

Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving missed the postseason thanks to a pair of knee surgeries - the first to remove troublesome hardware, the second as a result of bacteria discovered at the site. While these reports are just talk at this point, while Irving was in Cleveland, he had expressed interest in going to NY to play for the Knicks on multiple occasions.

Although absolutely no facts were ever presented, sports commentators and pundits presumed that either Irving would not want to remain in Boston due to the breakout play of Terry Rozier (who is also a point guard) or that the Celtics would get rid of Irving now that Rozier established himself as a legitimate starter.

"In this business, I've experienced it all and I've seen a lot, so we'll see what management decides", Irving said of the possibility of reuniting with his former Cavaliers teammate, after their relationship ended on a sour note with Irving reportedly asking to be traded and step out from James' shadow.

"When all that stuff at that time comes, we'll see what happens". Besides, Irving has more important things to worry about this summer.

So, should the Celtics really consider trading Irving?

"My hope is that maybe we could limit it to maybe one question a day about what I'm doing next year", Irving half-joked to reporters.

Rafael Nadal into French Open finals against Dominic Thiem
For Nadal it would be title number eleven in Paris and a seventeenth Major overall, for Thiem it is a first final at a Slam. Rafael Nadal bids for his record-extending 11th French Open championship when he faces Dominic Thiem in the final.

"I think you guys can feel my attitude is really just redemption next year", Irving said.

Irving, who made an instant impact for the Celtics before being sidelined by a knee injury in March, was coy when asked about a potential reunion with arguably one of the greatest players in the history of the National Basketball Association. Until I get to that point, then I can't really answer any questions. And of course our anchor Al (Horford) and now getting my man Gordon (Hayward) back. "Only beneficial. I love that they have that belief in themselves because they saw it firsthand what it was like to be on that big stage".

The Celtics expect Irving to be completely recovered by the start of training camp in the fall. Irving has earned every bit of that money, and absolutely nobody should have expected him to sacrifice something with a contract extension. "Just making sure I'm healthy enough for September, just trying not to push it too hard, [and] just taking my time with the rehab and feeling good".
