Trump credits his tweet in Rep. Sanford's defeat

Top races included the SC gubernatorial election and multiple state and federal congressional elections to determine the Republican and Democratic candidates that will be on November's ballot.

Sanford told his supporters shortly before 11 p.m. he was likely to lose his bid for re-election Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the state's Governor, Henry McMaster, will face-off against fellow Republican John Warren in a special runoff election later this month, after McMaster failed to secure more than half of the majority vote.

Sanford, a consistent critic of Trump from within the president's own party, lost to state legislator Katie Arrington.

Trump's post was made less than three hours before polls closed. "He is better off in Argentina", the president wrote, referring to Sanford's trip to South America in 2009 to have an affair while his unknowing staff in the governor's office told reporters he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

In defense of his stance on Trump, Sanford has said he criticizes anyone regardless of party if they deserve it.

Sanford's defeat is a political victory for the president, showing his ability to convince a Republican base that worships him to follow his preferences in other races ― even when his endorsement arrives just three hours before the polls close.

Trump, who issued his tweet as he returned from his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Sanford "is better off in Argentina".

Trump was already making life hard for Sanford before that tweet.

This was Sanford's second stint serving as representative of South Carolina's 1st District.

Sanford had represented the Charleston district on and off for six terms, with eight years in the Governor's Mansion in between. And in a crucial race for Republicans in the Senate, Trump's pick easily won the nomination to run against Democratic Sen.

The general election is set for November 6. This race won't have a victor or loser until November, but it's worth noting that Comstock (R-Va.) ceded almost 40 percent of the vote to a little-known GOP primary challenger on Tuesday.
