'Without the Rhetoric' Against Kim, the Summit May Never Have Happened

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S., China, South Korea and Japan agree that sanctions imposed on North Korea won't be lifted until Kim Jong Un's regime can show complete disarmament, pushing back against North Korean suggestions that penalties would soon start being relaxed.

President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday, but the historic meeting was just the first step toward diplomacy, according to some experts.

Mr Trump insisted during the press conference which followed the summit, that he meant to invite Chairman Kim to meet with him at the White House in Washington, D.C., according to reports from North Korea's Central News Agency the leader has since accepted the invitation.

"Most certainly in the president's first term", he said, speaking to a pool of journalists in Seoul, South Korea, where he was meeting his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.

"Between the United States and North Korea, it is mainly the nuclear issue - the threat issue posed by DPRK towards the U.S. and its allies", he said.

As Trump acknowledged that denuclearization would not be accomplished overnight, the North suggested Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearization before USA sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed. President Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most unsafe problem. "No longer - sleep well tonight!" Mr Trump said he wanted to see United States troops withdraw from the South.

The summit in Singapore did mark a reduction in tensions - a sea change from last fall, when North Korea was conducting nuclear and missile tests and Trump and Kim were trading threats and insults that stoked fears of war. What if America suffers buyer's remorse and the president (or perhaps the next president) reneges, and Kim finds that he is as vulnerable as was Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, whose fate national security adviser John Bolton has made clear he would happily assign to the North Korean leader? "They are fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea. We got to know each other well in a very confined period of time", he said.

Pompeo, who is scheduled to travel to Beijing Thursday, said he isn't sure when the next conversation with North Korea will next take place but that it could happen "fairly quickly" - as soon as the coming week.

In case you haven't seen the cringe-worthy production yet, The Trump administration apparently put together a four-minute long faux movie trailer starring the two leaders as crusaders for peace and the President showed the video to Kim Jon Un on an iPad during their meeting about denuclearizing North Korea.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat. Trump cast the decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue.

All media in North Korea is controlled by the state and so the program's entirely positive view of Kim, the summit, and its results come as no surprise.
