Trump praises Supreme Court ruling in internet sales tax case

"States like South Dakota will now be allowed to require sellers that are selling substantial amounts of product into the state to collect and remit sales tax", he said.

"Local sellers are going to be protected, said Jon Hearst, President of the Retailers Association of MA".

Hurst said particularly with so many people owning smartphones today, online sales have accelerated.

A U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring most websites to collect sales taxes from online shoppers should level the playing field of Minnesota Main Street retailers and their online counterparts, several state leaders said Thursday.

"Any state with sales taxes already has some sort of variance when it comes to exemptions and reporting rules", he said.

North Dakota could collect $20 to $50 million from online retailers after Thursday's Supreme Court ruling.

Smaller online companies are anxious about calculating taxes for literally thousands of jurisdictions. The law makes an exception for companies with less than $100,000 in annual sales or 200 transactions in the state, seeking to help smaller retailers compete with big e-commerce incumbents.

"E-commerce has shown us over the last 10 years, most of those issues are, by and large, solved".

Sen. Eric Lesser, D-Longmeadow, Senate chairman of the Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies, said the decision was the correct one. In 2014, Amazon, the largest online retailer, began collecting the tax in Florida after it opened a series of "fulfillment centers" in the state.
