Two dozen more confirmed in parasite outbreak linked to Del Monte

Following a month of bad news about lettuce contamination, Del Monte brand prepared vegetable trays are the newest casualty in foodborne illness outbreak.

Cyclospora cayetanensis, the CDC noted, is a "single-celled parasite that causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis".

The recalled products were distributed to the following stores: Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond's, Sentry, Potash, Meehan's, Country Market, FoodMax Supermarket, and Peapod.

In its June 15, 28 and 28 outbreak statements the CDC reported the victims were "people who reportedly consumed" pre-packaged Del Monte Fresh Produce vegetable trays containing broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and dill dip.

Still, products distributed to each of the four states, as well as IL and IN, have been recalled. The recall affected three different sizes of vegetable trays containing broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery and dill dip.

The states with reported victims are Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and MI, according to the CDC, with seven people hospitalized so far.

The number of outbreaks could continue to climb, according to University of Minnesota professor Michael T. Osterholm, a food-borne disease expert who said tracking the outbreaks will be challenging. The affected trays also have a best if enjoyed by date of June 17th of 2018.Seven people have been hospitalized after eating the food thus far. Symptoms include frequent diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach pain or cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue.

FDA has not identified which of the ingredients is the vehicle for this outbreak; each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration.

The CDC urges consumers to not eat the recalled vegetable trays, and instead, they should throw them away.
