Roger Federer breezes past Lajovic in straight sets in Wimbledon first round

But it was only delaying the inevitable as Federer, embarking on his 20th Wimbledon campaign, finished off surely one of his shortest matches with a 6-1 6-3 6-4 victory taking just one hour and 19 minutes.

The only things unfamiliar about Federer were his clothes.

"Felt right at home again, so that was a really nice feeling", he said.

Roger Federer begins his quest for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon title as the grass-court tournament looks set to start in glorious sunshine at the All-England Club.

This is not the first time Uniqlo has signed a big tennis star.

An appeal court will now hear the case on July 29, according to Mazboh's lawyer, Emad Kamal. Mazboh later posted another video apologizing to "respectable Egyptians" for her remarks.

Federer, contesting his 20th consecutive Wimbledon, is bidding to become only the second player to win nine singles titles on the London lawns after Martina Navratilova.

Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., opened with a 7-5, 6-0, 6-1 victory over Britain's Liam Broady while Peter Polansky, also of Thornhill, dropped his first-round match to Austria's Dennis Novak. Perhaps most importantly, the deal also features a clause that says he will continue to be paid even if he doesn't play.

The 36-year-old eight-time Wimbledon champion penned a contract with Japanese apparel giant Uniqlo, virtually severing a two-decade association with Nike in the process. One year on, and Tomic had a far less turbulent start to his Wimbledon fortnight.

Uniqlo tweeted a photo of Federer shortly after he headed out for the match.

Third seeded Marin Cilic, the runner-up to Federer in 2017 and this year's Queen's champion, takes on Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka. The 22-year-old Russian next faces Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain.

Elsewhere, Sam Querrey, the American 11th seed who made the semi-finals previous year, saw off Australia's Jordan Thompson 6-2 6-4 6-3.

Federer played at 65 successive slams from the 2000 Australian Open, until missing the French Open in 2016.

In the women's event, there were wins for Czech seventh seed Karol?na Pliskova who defeated Britain's Harriet Dart 7-6 (7/2) 2-6 6-1 and 10th seeded American Madison Keys, a 6-4 6-2 victor over Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.

Cilic, who reached the final at the All England Club a year ago, defeated Novak Djokovic in last month's Queen's final in the build-up to Wimbledon 2018.

Federer starts as favourite to book a place in the semi-final, given his head-to-head record against Anderson which stands at 5-0. Novak Djokovic's clash with Kei Nishikori and Rafael Nadal's duel with Juan Martin del Potro share the Centre Court limelight.
