Dane County bird tests positive for West Nile virus

On Thursday, the Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District reported that mosquitoes from two locations in Contra Costa County have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Go to the Utah Department of Health website for updates that show specific locations where pools are showing positive test results for the West Nile Virus.

About half of the mosquitoes, 26 of 55, collected from traps around town this week were Culex tarsalis, which can carry and transmit West Nile, he said. Approximately one in 150 people who catch the virus develop symptoms such as encephalitis, or swelling of the brain, and meningitis, which is swelling of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. About one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms.

The announcement comes after news that the city of Sacramento unintentionally heightened the risk of virus transmission in the Pocket by creating bodies of stagnant water ideal for mosquito breeding. People cannot spread the virus through coughs or touch, nor can they get it from eating infected animals.
