Malloy and state public health officials are advising CT residents to be aware of a rapid build-up of West Nile virus (WNV) activity within the state as recent tests show that infected mosquitoes are rising at levels higher than normal for this time of year. Passaic and Union counties are the only ones in the state that have yet to receive a positive test in 2018.

Last week, Maryland health officials reported the first confirmed case of a West Nile-infected adult in that state. The previous high was in 2012, when they counted 1,363 virus-positive pools. Nationally, there have been 39 cases and one West Nile-associated death. One hundred thirty four human cases of WNV, including three fatalities, have been diagnosed in CT residents since 2000. Our goal is for that to be the only one.
