Russian Federation: 18 killed in Siberian oil worker helicopter crash

Eighteen people were killed in a Russian helicopter crash on Saturday in East Siberia region, authorities said.

"According to preliminary information, the blades of the helicopter collided with cargo on the external load sling system of the Mil Mi-8AMT, RA-22427, which had taken off earlier".

"There were three crew members and 15 passengers overseas the Mi-8 that belonged to Utair airline", an emergency services official told TASS news agency.

Investigators are looking into what caused the deadly incident.

Soon after take-off, the helicopter collided with the outside cargo that another helicopter was carrying, officials said, adding that the second helicopter landed safely after ditching its cargo.

A Russian helicopter has crash-landed in Krasnoyarsk Territory, with reports saying at least 18 people have died.

The helicopter was operated by the Utair airline, according to an emergency services source cited by TASS, a Russian news agency.

It is believed the helicopter was taking workers to an oil well.

"A Mi-8 helicopter which was carrying external suspended cargo and no passengers completed take-off first".

The helicopter was manufactured in 2010.

The airline said it sent its specialists to the site of the crash.

'The helicopter had undergone a pre-flight inspection, it was technically sound, ' said a law enforcement source.
