OH race too close to call, but Trump claims victory

On Tuesday, voters in Ohio's 12th Congressional District went to the polls for the final major special election before the 2018 midterms.

Republicans appeared to have held off a Democratic surge on Tuesday in a traditionally conservative OH district many Democrats had hoped would serve up an unlikely victory and boost their chances of sweeping wins in November's midterm elections.

Trump visited Ohio's 12th District on Saturday and appeared on stage with Balderson at a rally created to jolt conservatives into turning out to vote in an election that will gauge where the Republican Party stands less than three months before the midterms.

Balderson had both Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a strong Trump critic, and the president behind him.

The day's races, like dozens before them, pitted the strength of Trump's fiery supporters against the Democratic Party's anti-Trump resistance.

Trump won the district by 11 percentage points in the White House race in 2016 and Republican Pat Tiberi won re-election to the House by a whopping 37 percentage points.

CNN chief national correspondent and anchor John King on Tuesday noted that a Democratic win in Tuesday's special election in a heavily-red district in OH could signal a blue wave in the fall that would likely put impeachment "on the table".

Republicans have pumped money into the race in hopes of avoiding another special election embarrassment.

And even as they celebrated victory, one of those groups warned it can't be duplicated across the map in three months if some Republicans don't up their efforts.

A number of states are picking candidates today for that big election in the fall. In a swing State that Mr. Trump won by eight points in 2016, Mr. Balderson's 10-point lead from June has evaporated.

The two will face off again in November to see who holds the seat in 2019 and 2020. Republicans have controlled the district for 35 years. Debbie Stabenow, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. He appeared equally uncomfortable answering questions from reporters about whether Trump's appearance might blunt the impact of the recent endorsement from a prominent Trump adversary, Republican Gov. John Kasich. Other top candidates include Sharice Davids, an EMILY's List-endorsed former MMA fighter attempting to become the first Native American lesbian in Congress, and Tom Niermann, a teacher running a more moderate campaign with a long list of local officials' endorsements. When asked about this in the polling place parking lot by the Guardian, Balderson turned his back and left it to an accompanying aide to insist that Balderson really meant Danny O'Connor was a liberal.

But political observers said the fact the race was so close in a district that Democrats have not held since Ronald Reagan was president was notable.
