Russia: Saudi Arabia has right to reject Canada's interference

The fallout continues in the diplomatic dust-up between Canada and Saudi Arabia, with Riyadh issuing a laundry list of edicts to show its displeasure with criticism from Global Affairs Canada.

Canada sparked fury in Riyadh last week when it called for the "immediate release" of rights campaigners, including award-winning women's rights activist Samar Badawi, the sister of jailed blogger Raif Badawi.

Saudi Arabia's diplomatic row with Canada is showing no signs of slowing.

Media reports also suggest Saudi Arabia may cancel thousands of scholarships for students attending school in Canada. Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland, whose tweet sparked the hostility, said that "Canada will continue to advocate for human rights and for the courageous women and men who push for these fundamental rights around the world" after Saudi's response. Meanwhile, the Saudi Health Attaché in the United States and Canada, Dr. Fahd Al-Tamimi, said the Kingdom has stopped all treatment programs in Canada and is transferring all Saudi patients from Canadian hospitals to other hospitals outside Canada.

Several countries have expressed support for Saudi Arabia, including Egypt and Russian Federation, which both told Ottawa it was unacceptable to lecture the kingdom on human rights.

Saudi Arabia on Sunday expelled Canada's ambassador in retaliation for Ottawa's call to free detained Saudi civil society activists.
