Coroner States That Margot Kidder's Death Was An Intentional Overdose

In a statement provided to The Associated Press Wednesday, Coroner Richard Wood said Kidder's death was "a result of a self-inflicted drug and alcohol overdose".

Kidder's longtime friend, Joan Kesich, who found her body, called the actress and activist "fearless". But now her daughter, Maggie McGuane, has revealed that her mom committed suicide.

McGuane noted that Montana has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation and she urged people with mental illness to seek help.

Storm warning canceled as Hurricane Hector moves south of Hawaii
A high surf warning has been issued for east-facing shores of Hawaii Island for 12-13 foot waves. Hurricane Hector, left, can be seen heading west toward Hawaii.

Margot had struggled for years, very publicly at times, with bipolar disorder. She continued to act in many movies and TV shows, most recently the 2017 film "The Neighborhood".

While no further details will be released of her suicide, McGuane added that "it's a unique sort of grief and pain and that she would like to reach out to every family who is suffering through a loss by suicide".

Both Kidder and co-star Christopher Reeve, who played Superman, were relative unknowns when they got their leading parts, and neither saw many major roles afterwards. She also appeared in The Great Waldo Pepper with Robert Redford in 1975, Brian De Palma's Sisters in 1973 and The Amityville Horror in 1979. She became paranoid and disappeared for four days until she was found in a stranger's backyard and taken to Olive View Medical Center by police. Now she feels that the news being out is a big relief to her, The Chicago Sun Times reported.
