Hector intensifies as it crosses into Central Pacific

According to the National Hurricane Center, "small but powerful" Hector continues to churn away in the eastern Pacific as a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. The center of Hector will pass just south of the Big Island by about 150 to 200 miles, close enough to the Big Island to bring enhanced showers and thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Hurricane Hector will continue to churn out in the Pacific and could reach Hawaii as early as Wednesday although, by that time, it should start to weaken.

Hawaii's Big Island already is dealing with another natural disaster - the eruption of Kilauea Volcano in the southeast.

Depending on its ultimate track, the storm could bring thunderstorms, gusty winds and increased surf to parts of the island and could also cause unsafe rip currents off the east- and south-facing beaches.

Hawaii emergency officials are keeping track of a hurricane that's expected to pass to the south of the islands this week.

The hurricane is moving about 14 miles per hour with wind speeds up to 140 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

State officials urged residents to take precaution and prepare for the storm.

"Hector is our first hurricane this year", said Tom Travis, administrator of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, in a press release on Friday.

China reveals plan to tax $60 bn worth American goods
Chinese officials are trying to reassure markets and the local population that the USA moves would have little impact. Timing will depend on the actions of the United States, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said in a separate statement.

So far, Kilauea's eruption has been ongoing for 93 days straight and more than two dozen volcanic fissures have opened up.

CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said while Hector is heading in Big Island 's general direction, it's too early to tell if it's on a collision course with the volcano.

A tropical storm watch is in effect Monday for waters south of the Big Island.
