Storm warning canceled as Hurricane Hector moves south of Hawaii

Hector's center will track about 150 miles south of the Big Island today, then continuing westward, remaining well south of the rest of the Hawaiian Islands through Thursday. The remnants of the tropical cyclone are likely producing an area of tropical-storm-force winds that should gradually decrease in intensity as it rotates around the northern and northwestern portion of John during the next few hours.

A high surf warning has been issued for east-facing shores of Hawaii Island for 12-13 foot waves.

The tropical Atlantic remains cooler than normal and there is a relatively high potential that a weak El Niño develops in the next several months.

The storm is not now a threat to any land.

The peak time of the Atlantic hurricane season stretches between mid August and late October when historically the largest storms have done the most damage.
