Indonesia quake death toll close to 400

Indonesia quake death toll close to 400

The aftershock comes just four days after a devastating 6.9-magnitude quake struck Lombok, which relief agencies said had wiped out entire villages in the worst-hit regions in the north and west. A magnitude 6.4 natural disaster on July 29 killed 16 people and cracked and weakened many structures, amplifying the damage that occurred in Monday's quake.

After a deadly natural disaster devastated the Indonesian island of Lombok last weekend, Husni Handayani thought the worst was over.

Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless on the island.

Indonesia's top security minister says the death toll from the quake on Sunday has risen to 319, according to The Associated Press. It said it didn't have the potential to cause a tsunami.

The strong aftershock, measured at magnitude 5.9 by the U.S. Geological Survey, caused panic, damage to buildings, landslides and injuries.

U.S. media criticizes Trump's tariffs decision on Turkey
Erdogan appealed to a crowd in the city of Bayburt to exchange dollars and gold for Turkish lira to prop up the plunging currency. But Turkey is not manipulating its currency; the lira is falling because the country is suffering from an economic crisis.

"We understand that most of the injuries or deaths are the result of buildings collapsing or falling debris, so it is understandable that people are anxious about their homes being safe", said Ritola Tasmaya, Secretary General of the Indonesian Red Cross.

People in Bali, an island 93 miles from Lombok, also reported feeling the quake.

The numbers have increased as reports came in from areas isolated by the 6.9 magnitude quake, which struck off the waters of the northern part of Lombok island.

The region has been hit by more than 350 aftershocks, the worst of which struck yesterday.

The rise in death toll comes as Facebook apologises for automatically decorating posts about the deadly natural disaster with images of balloons and confetti on the social media platform.

Makeshift medical facilities have been set up to treat the injured. "At the most we go in quickly to grab something and then run back out".

Thousands of tourists have also left Lombok since Sunday, fearing further earthquakes, some on extra flights provided by airlines and others on ferries to the neighbouring island of Bali.

Almost 2,500 people have been hospitalized with serious injuries and more than 156,000 people are displaced due to the extensive damage to homes.

Lying on the fault lines in the Pacific Basin, Indonesia is a hotspot for earthquakes.

"We can help tourists to get to the airport but of course we can't buy them tickets for free", he said, adding that authorities were providing free accommodation, food and transport to those in need.
