Two Infected With West Nile Virus In First Cases Of 2018

While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection. County health officials said in the release that there have been no human cases in DeKalb County this year.

Dozens of states are reporting a boom in cases of people contracting West Nile Virus.

That includes the two in Waterloo region, one in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health coverage area and one in Perth county. The department has not specified where in Cabell County the positive mosquitoes were found. "These mosquitoes are most abundant in urban and suburban areas with dense human populations". Efforts will continue, but residents are strongly urged to continue taking steps to protect themselves.

Mosquitoes tested at various locations, including Hartford's Keney Park, have tested positive for the West Nile Virus this year.

According to the CDC, 8 out of 10 individuals who become infected with WNV do not experience any symptoms; however, 1 in 5 will develop a fever and other symptoms such as headache, aches, joint pain, diarrhea, vomiting and fatigue, which can persist for weeks to months.

Dawn and dusk: Mosquitoes bite in the early morning and evening so it is important to wear proper clothing and repellent if outside during these times.

When using DEET, use the lowest concentration effective for the time spent outdoors (for example, 6 percent lasts approximately two hours and 20 percent for four hours) and wash treated skin when returning indoors.
